(Luhring Augustine Gallery):

Salman Toor: New Paintings and Drawings

17 December 2022 – 9 March 2023

M WOODS 798

Curated at M WOODS by Victor Wang, Artistic Director and Chief Curator, M WOODS, and Qi Yuanlin, Assistant Curator, M WOODS.

In order to have a real relationship with somebody you have got to take the risk of being thought, God forbid, ‘an oddball.’ (James Baldwin)

Salman Toor: New Paintings and Drawings is the first solo museum presentation in Asia of Pakistan-born, New York-based artist Salman Toor. For the last two years, Toor has worked closely with M WOODS’ Artistic Director, Victor Wang, to develop an ambitious solo show for Beijing that critically examines specific topics that converge in Toor’s work, from museological allegories and imperialist histories depicted by Toor’s 'Fag Puddles', to his nocturnal panoramic landscapes that both give shelter , through a selection of 27 new paintings and 23 new works on paper.

For this exhibition, several key constellations and themes from Toor’s paintings and drawings have been selected to help to articulate how the artist navigates perspectives on immigration, citizenship, and the queer experience, for example, as events in his paintings that are framed by memory, gender, and identity. Through the use of allegory, especially by repurposing the legacy of Oriental painting, Toor intelligently weaves together South Asian painterly expression with European Old Master techniques in monochromes of colour that softly portray the everyday intimacy and lived experiences of the South Asian diaspora. These works and themes have been selected for display to help to stimulate important discussions locally and to provide a space for a critical openness to develop and take effect.

From Salman Toor:

I’m excited and honored to be showing at M Woods! In the new body of work that I am preparing to present in China, I am exploring narratives of self-love and the perception of difference as a conversation among the cultures of the Global South. I look forward to sharing it with the museum’s audience.

From Luhring Augustine Gallery:

Luhring Augustine Gallery is delighted that the first solo museum exhibition of Salman Toor’s work in China will be presented at M Woods, and we are greatly looking forward to the show that the artist and curator Victor Wang are organizing. Salman’s insightful, intimate, and exquisitely articulated paintings and works on paper will find an engaged new audience in Beijing, thus adding a unique and important voice to the consistently impressive and thoughtful programming at M Woods.

From Victor Wang:

Love is an important element in life. For some communities, the simple act of loving is also a radical act of self-discovery and belonging. Salman Toor is an artist who embraces the complexities of love, beautifully painting monochromatic scenes of intimate experiences of the queer community and the everyday lived experiences of the South Asian diaspora. Salman Toor’s paintings allows us to contemplate how art can also be a vehicle in exploring concepts of gender, history, colonialism, and race through the brushstrokes of green that he so masterfully employs on the canvas. We are very honoured to curate and develop Toor’s first solo museum exhibition in Asia.

*More information about the exhibition will be released in the following weeks.
